Your estimated tax
a month
Where it goes
Your tax is split using the shares in the 2027 Appropriation Bill, the plan for how all government spending is divided. Tax is not tied to any one purpose in practice, so this is a fair-share picture, not a receipt.
The government spends more than it collects, and loans must be paid first. In 2025, about Rs 46 of every Rs 100 of government revenue and grants went on interest alone (Central Bank of Sri Lanka figures, see revenue).
What this estimate leaves out
How we work it out
- Income tax: your monthly income is multiplied by 12, the personal relief of Rs 1,800,000 a year is taken off, and the rest is taxed in bands: 6% on the first Rs 1,000,000, then 18%, 24% and 30% on each next Rs 500,000, and 36% on the balance. These are the rates for the year of assessment. See the Inland Revenue Department notice. Other reliefs, such as those for donations or insurance, are not applied, and the rates may change. Please check with the Inland Revenue Department for your own return.
- VAT: prices in shops already include 18% VAT, so the VAT inside a price is 18/118 of it. We apply this to the spending you enter in boxes 2 and 3. Fuel has carried VAT since January 2024.
- Where it goes: the shares come from the 2027 Appropriation Bill, grouped as on the About page.
This is an estimate for general understanding. It is not tax advice and not a record of what you actually paid. Rates last checked 2026-10-21.
